Neptune Line Astrocartography: Imagination and Illusion
What a Neptune line may mean on your astrocartography map: imagination and illusion, with real examples from Seattle, San Francisco and Mauritius.
The Neptune MC and IC lines of the example chart, with Seattle, San Francisco, Port Louis and Ashgabat.
A Neptune line marks the places where Neptune was rising, setting, overhead or underfoot at your birth. Neptune is the planet of imagination, intuition and dissolving boundaries, so Neptune lines are often linked with places that feel dreamy, creative or spiritual, and also with places where things feel hazy. Neptune was found in 1846, and it is invisible to the naked eye.
Two lines side by side
Neptune takes about 165 years to go round the Sun, so it spends over a decade in each sign. In 1992 it sat beside Uranus: on our example chart (Casablanca, 14 May 1992, 12:00) the two planets were 1.0 degree apart, 17° Capricorn and 18° Capricorn. They meet like that only about once every 170 years, and the last time was in 1993. As a result the Uranus and Neptune MC lines run next to each other, 0.9 degrees of longitude apart, about 65 km at Vancouver’s latitude. People born around then at the same time of day share that pairing, so it says more about a generation than about you. See the Uranus line guide for the other half.
The four Neptune lines, with examples
- Neptune MC (top). Often linked with a public life shaped by creativity, ideals or service, and with an unclear sense of direction. On our chart it passes 1 km from Oakland, 9 km from Seattle and 17 km from San Francisco.
- Neptune IC (bottom). Often linked with a dreamy, sensitive sense of home. It passes 28 km from Port Louis, Mauritius, and 54 km from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
- Neptune ASC (rising). Often linked with a soft, impressionable way of arriving in a place. It passes 7 km from Madang, Papua New Guinea.
- Neptune DSC (setting). Often linked with idealised partnerships, where it is hard to see the other person clearly. No large city on this chart sits close to it.
Imagination and illusion
Neptune cuts both ways. The same quality that makes a place feel inspiring can make it hard to see clearly. Traditional readers link Neptune lines with artists, musicians, healers and anyone who works from imagination. They also warn about escapism, rose-coloured judgement and vague plans. In our rankings Neptune is one of four lines treated as demanding: it lowers a place’s score a little when it is within 300 km, and it is always shown. Demanding does not mean bad.
Ways to work with a Neptune line
- Go for the inspiration: creative projects, retreats, time near water or in nature.
- Keep practical decisions concrete: contracts, rent and visas deserve a second pair of eyes.
- Pair it with a grounded line nearby, such as a Saturn or Venus line, if clarity matters to you.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Neptune line bad?
No. It is demanding in the sense of asking for clarity. Many people choose Neptune places for creative and spiritual reasons.
Why are the Neptune and Uranus lines close together on my map?
If you were born between about 1988 and 1998, the two planets were in the same sign, and for a birth at the same time of day their lines run within about ten degrees of longitude of each other. It is a generational pattern.
Neptune MC or Neptune IC: what is the difference?
The MC is about your public life and direction. The IC is about home and your inner world.
How close do I need to be to a Neptune line?
About 150 km counts as on the line, and the effect fades towards 700 km.
