Right on the line. A place where your work may meet opportunity and recognition, good for career moves and public life.

Jupiter on the IC: Philadelphia

About 7 km from the line. Often linked with home, family and a feeling of being supported where you live.

How to read your astrocartography map

Astrocartography, also called locational astrology, takes the sky at the exact moment you were born and projects it onto the world map. The technique was popularised by astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s. Each line on your map marks the places where one planet sat on one of the four angles of your chart when you were born.

Lines are not good or bad on their own. They show where a planet’s themes may feel louder in your life. A Venus line might bring out warmth and creativity, while a Saturn line might ask for more focus and patience.

The four kinds of lines

  • MC line (Midheaven): where the planet was at its highest point. Linked with career, reputation and how the public sees you. It runs straight from north to south.
  • IC line: where the planet was at its lowest point, beneath your feet. Linked with home, family and private life. Also a straight north to south line.
  • ASC line (Ascendant): where the planet was rising on the eastern horizon. Linked with how you come across and your energy. It curves across the map.
  • DSC line (Descendant): where the planet was setting on the western horizon. Linked with partners, close relationships and collaboration. It also curves.

Example map for a sample chart: the straight gold lines are Venus at the top (MC, near Lisbon) and bottom (IC) of the chart; the curved gold lines are Venus rising and setting.

What each planet brings

Every planet has four lines, one for each angle, so a full map shows 40 lines. Here is the short version of what each planet is often linked with:

  • Sun: identity, confidence and being recognized
  • Moon: home, feelings and a sense of belonging
  • Mercury: learning, writing, trade and conversation
  • Venus: love, beauty, pleasure and creative work
  • Mars: drive, courage and competition; can feel intense
  • Jupiter: growth, luck, travel and opportunity
  • Saturn: structure, discipline and long-term work; can feel heavy
  • Uranus: change, independence and the unexpected
  • Neptune: imagination, spirituality and dreams; can feel hazy
  • Pluto: transformation, depth and power; can feel intense

Reading a city on your map

Find a city you care about, then look for the lines that pass closest to it. The closer the line, the stronger its theme tends to feel. When two lines cross near a place, both planets may be active there at once, so read them together.

A single place can carry several lines. If a Venus MC line and a Saturn DSC line both pass near the same city, it may be a place where your creative work shines while relationships ask for commitment.

Why your birth time matters

The Earth turns one degree every four minutes, so a birth time that is off by half an hour moves your lines by more than 800 kilometres at the equator. If you know your time from a birth certificate, use it. If you don’t, choose “I don’t know my birth time” and we will show a simplified map that focuses on what stays reliable.

Using your map well

Treat your map as a prompt for reflection rather than a verdict. It can help you choose where to travel next, compare cities you are already considering, or understand why one place has always felt easy and another hard. Practical things such as work, cost of living, visas and the people you love still matter most.

Frequently asked questions

Is this astrocartography map really free?

Yes. Your map with all your planetary lines and your top three cities is free. You only pay if you want the full report with every line explained and your top 20 cities.

Do I need my exact birth time?

An exact time gives precise lines, because they shift by about one degree of longitude for every four minutes of time. Without a time we show a simplified map and say which lines are approximate.

How far from a line do I feel its effect?

Many astrologers treat the few hundred kilometres closest to a line as its strongest zone, fading with distance. Your report shows how far each city is from the lines that touch it.

What is the difference between astrocartography and a relocation chart?

Astrocartography shows all your lines on one world map at a glance. A relocation chart recalculates your whole birth chart for one specific place. They work well together.

Is astrocartography scientific?

No. It is an astrological tool for reflection and entertainment, not a prediction or professional advice. Many people use it as a thoughtful way to explore where to travel or live.
